Moving on

Orion

The road is lined with tall maple trees. The colour of the leaves has started to turn as we are heading into autumn. It’s Vi’s favourite time of year. Since I’ve known her, she has planted herself in the park to watch the leaves. She says that it’s calming. A process, she says. The cycle of seasons and each season brings its own special beauty. I didn’t get it then.

I glance over to see her biting her lower lip. She’s worried about seeing her mother again. I am still unsure about this family reunion. I don’t think Vi owes these people a damn thing. I can’t get over the fact that they dumped her on her grandparents and tore off into the sunset to be happy. I know Aaron had money. I checked out his background the next day. He owns a distribution warehouse and has done well for himself. They never sent a dime to her grandmother after her husband died and Vi ended up having to leave school and pay bills. Marie never worked after meeting Aaron and has spent her time volunteering. Volunteering! Probably to appease her guilty conscious.

Vi is a bundle of nerves. We went back and forth on the decision and ultimately decided that she needed to see this through. She has valid reasoning. She has questions she wants answers to. The killer was that she didn’t want to have any regrets. I have lived a life of regrets and never want Vi to feel what I’ve felt.

Ava called this morning to ask if she needed moral support, followed by Maddie, then Hanna. Vi politely refused but told them to be on standby for when she came home because she had no idea how this was going to go.

We’ve reached the end of the drive. I notice her hand shaking. I take it in mine, “We don’t have to go in,” I tell her. At that moment, Aaron comes to the front door. She raises her head to the door as she hears the creaking of the hinge.

“Yes, I do. I need to see this through.” She raises her eyes to mine. “Thank you for being with me.”

“Nowhere else I would rather be, pretty girl.” I smile at her. “Where my girls go, I go.” I touch her cheek and am rewarded with her brilliant smile. “You ready or you want me to drive around the block a few times?” I ask teasingly.

“Ready.” I get out and stalk to Vi’s door, helping her out of the car. I see that Aaron is agitated. He hasn’t told his wife of this visit and is taking a chance that this will bring Marie back from the edge. When I called him the other day to inform him that we would make the trip, he informed me that he didn’t want to tell Marie in case Vi changes her mind and didn’t want Marie agonizing over the meeting. Despite him being a complete dick with Vi, it seems like he truly loves his wife.
